Profile

The Evia Film Project is the third pillar of activities in addition to the Thessaloniki International Film Festival in November and the International Documentary Film Festival in March. It aims to consolidate Northern Evia, a region severely affected by the forest fires of 2021, as an international center for green cinema. This year, the Evia Film Project focuses on water as its central theme. The sea, rain, all water resources, and their crucial links to humanity take center stage, along with the agony caused by their destruction.

The North of the Greek island of Evia will host its third celebration of environmental cinema with screenings, masterclasses, and networking activities for professionals. There will also be workshops for children and young people, concerts, and a gastronomic event focusing on sustainability. The project, an initiative of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture, will take place between 2 and 6 July in Edipsos, Agia Anna, and Limni.

As we mentioned in our previous article, in which we listed all the films to be screened in the coming days, the opening film of the third meeting will be Jérôme Salle’s L’Odysée, starring Lambert Wilson, Pierre Niney, and Audrey Tautou. The overture, with Greek actor Fanis Mouratidis as master of ceremonies, will take place in the charming open-air cinema Apollon (Edipsos), which was specially refurbished for the Evia Film Project after being closed for decades.

Among the musical events organized this year are two special concerts: Lena Kitsopoulou, Doros Dimosthenous, and an outstanding ensemble of musicians performing Greek folk songs on 6 July at Edipsos, as the closing event of the 3rd Evia Film Project; and a unique DJ set by The Boy (Alexandros Voulgaris) at KYMA on Thursday 4 July.

The Evia Masterclasses will introduce us to the secrets and works of film and TV industry professionals from Greece and around the world, in the towns of Agia Anna and Edipsos. Among the speakers, we will enjoy, with free access, talks with Emin Alper, Yorgos Tsourgiannis, Kostis Maraveyas, Katerina Bei, Yolanda Markopoulou, Fokion Xenos, Pantelis Panteloglou, and Lin Alluna.

The spot designed by the self-taught artist Panos Arvanitakis (Entelechus), a student of Psychology at Panteion University, demonstrates the festival’s vocation to offer an opportunity to young creators. On the other hand, we will also have the Agora, the space of decompression that develops through four areas: the mind, the body, the spirit, and the discovery. In a unique environment, professionals are invited to an innovative circular economy model to discover or reconnect with Greek projects presented in previous years at TIFF and the TIDF Agora. In addition, it will host a series of meetings aimed at industry professionals from all over the world.

For the second time, the CIRCLE Women Doc Accelerator, a unique documentary workshop for female-identified producers and directors, will take place. In addition, at Evia, we will also discover the latest XR technology films that raise ecological issues and explore the impact of human intervention on the environment. And there’s no shortage of podcasts on the theme of water, which can be listened to from the comfort of the Podcast Bench at KYMA, overlooking an idyllic view over the sea.

Evia Film Project

Children and young people will be able to explore and search for treasure as part of a workshop organized by WWF. At Eidpsos, the very young Pablo Soto Gonzalez, director, screenwriter, actor, musician and choreographer, a student at the Athens School of Arts, will talk to students about writing, directing and promoting films online, as well as on the festival circuit.

As previously announced, gastronomy and its relation to sustainability will be the focus of Evia thanks to journalists Eleni Psyhouli and Ioanna Stamoulou who will introduce us to the delights of Greek “mezes”. Attendees of the 3rd Evia Film Project will also enjoy natural sites of interest, with guided visits and tours.

The Evia Film Project is made possible thanks to the support of the Ministry of Culture, COSMOTE TV, Major Sponsor of the Festival, PPC, Strategic Partner of the Festival and Fischer, constant companion of the Festival. The event is held in collaboration with the National Centre for Audiovisual Media and Communications, the Greek Film Centre, the Municipalities of Istiaea-Edipsos and Mantoudi-Limni-Agia and the Port Authority of Evia Regional Unit, as well as the Association of Volunteer Rescue Forest Firefighters of Central-Northern Evia.
