Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival is the largest and longest-running film festival in Taiwan, and the 2024 edition is taking place between November 7th and 24th. The Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival Executive Committee has launched three annual events since 2018: the Golden Horse Fantastic Film Festival (GHFFF) in April, the Golden Horse Classic Film Festival (GHCFF) in July-August, and the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival (TGHFF) in November.

The opening film will be Strangers Eyes, which we enjoyed at the last Venice Film Festival. In this co-production between Taiwan, Singapore, France and the USA, after the mysterious disappearance of their baby daughter, a young couple receive strange videos and realise someone has been filming their daily life, even in their most intimate moments. The police set up surveillance around their home to catch the voyeur, but the family starts to crumble as secrets unravel under the scrutiny of eyes watching them from all sides. Strangers Eyes is directed by Yeo Siew-hua, a writer-director from Singapore and has received six nominations for the Golden Horse Award. His A Land Imagined won the Golden Leopard at Locarno 2018 and received awards for Best Original Screenplay and Best Original Film Score at the 2019 Golden Horse Awards. His latest film, Stranger Eyes, was the first Singaporean film to compete for Venice’s Golden Lion.

The Festival, which was founded in 1962, has no less than 17 sections, plus a surprise film, which this year will be The Brutalist. In the official competition section, 49 films will compete for 22 awards. Known as the Chinese-speaking Oscars, it is a major film event, a showcase for national and international cinema.

The film with the most nominations is the horror comedy Dead Talents Society, which is up for eleven Golden Horses. It is followed by Yen and Ai-Lee and Bel Ami with eight on second place.

Five films compete for the best narrative features award and the best director: Dead Talents Society (John Hsu), All Shall Be Well (Ray Yeung), An Unfinished Film (Lou Ye), Bel Ami (Geng Jun) and Stranger Eyes.

Among the films in competition, Shambhala (2024), directed by Nepali director Min Bahadur Bham (2024), premiered at the Berlinale, and is a co-production of Nepal, France, Norway, Hong Kong, Turkey, USA and Qatar; A Journey in Spring, by Wang Ping-wen; and Intimate Encounter by Chang Tso-chi, whose works have premiered at major film festivals (The Best of Times for Golden Lion at Venice, his Soul of a Demon and Thanatos, Drunk at Berlinale).

The Gala Première section includes the film Pierce, a debut that won the Best Director Award for Nelicia Low at the last Karlovy Vary Festival. It will be also screened Across the Waters, that was in Short Films Competition at Cannes 2024, directed by Viv Li, chinese filmmaker based in Berlin.

As every year, a filmmaker will be honoured as Outstanding Taiwanese Filmmaker of the Year, and veteran spray-paint artist, LI Si-jian, will be the laureate in recognition of his career on set decoration for more than 50 years. The main Golden Horse Awards Ceremony will be held on November 23rd at Taipei Music Center.
