The 78th Cannes Film Festival closed on 24 May with a strong Spanish presence, with two films in the Official Competition, Sirat, by Oliver Laxe, and Romería, by Carla Simón. The Competition Jury, chaired by the French actress Juliette Binoche, accompanied by a team made up of the American actress and filmmaker Halle Berry, the Indian director and screenwriter Payal Kapadia, the Italian actress Alba Rohrwacher, the Franco-Moroccan writer Leïla Slimani, and the Congolese director, documentary filmmaker, and producer Dieudo Hamadi, as well as the Korean director and screenwriter Hong Sangsoo, the Mexican director, screenwriter, and producer Carlos Reygadas, and the American actor Jeremy Strong, awarded the following prizes. The following prizes were awarded.

Competition

  • Palme d’or: It Was Just an Accident, Jafar Panahi.
  • Grand Prix: Sentimental Value, Joachim Trier.
  • Joint Jury Prize: Sirat (Oliver Laxe) and Sound of Falling (Mascha Schilinski).
  • Special Award: Resurrection, Bi Gan.
  • Best actress: Nadia Melliti, in La petite dernière by Hafsia Herzi.
  • Best actor: Wagner Moura in The Secret Agent, by Kleber Mendoça Filho.
  • Best director: Kleber Mendoça Filho in The Secret Agent.
  • Best screenplay: Jean-Pierre & Luc Dardenne for Jeunes mères.
  • Best short: I’m Glad You’re Dead Now, by Twafeek Baron.
  • Special mention to a short: Ali, by Adnan Al Rajeev.
  • Caméra d’or: The President´s Cake, by Hasan Hadi.
  • Special Mention: My Father’s Shadow, by Akinola Davies Jr.

It was just an accident

The jury of the Un certain regard section of the 78th Cannes Film Festival was chaired by British director, screenwriter and cinematographer Molly Manning Walker, accompanied by two women and two men: French-Swiss director and screenwriter Louise Courvoisier and Croatian director of the International Film Festival Rotterdam Vanja Kaludjercic, as well as Italian director, producer and screenwriter Roberto Minervini and Argentinian actor Nahuel Pérez Biscayart. The Un Certain Regard jury awarded the following prizes:

Best director
Arab & Tarzan Nasser,  for Once Upon a Time in Gaza.

Best actress

Cleo Diára, in  I Only Rest in the Storm, by Pedro Pinho.

Best actor
Frank Dillane, in Urchin, by Harris Dickinson.

Best Screenplay
Harry Lighton, for Pillion.
